Experienced oncologists know that good communication is therapeutic for patients and families and is a fundamental ingredient of what we have come to appreciate as quality care. Seriously ill patients and their loved ones have repeatedly identified the importance of various elements of good care such as trust in physicians, avoidance of unwanted life support, and respect for individual choices. Unfortunately, there are many examples of how physicians fall short of meeting the needs of patients and families.
